Steven’s Canyon Road, Mount Rainier by Peter Funch

In September 2016 Peter Funch will return to Washington for the third instalment of his exploration of the Cascade Range. Funch will continue to use this area’s rich tourism history to create comparative imagery. Alongside this he has gained access to the extensive photographic archive of Arthur E. Harrison at the University of Washington Library. The information and photographs there will enable a fuller portrait of the area and provide further comparisons.

Simon Norfolk’s series of Lewis Glacier on Mount Kenya will be on display as part of the Noorderlicht Photofestival. Running from 22 May – 3rd July at Museum Belvédère in Heerenveen, Netherlands. Chaltwasser Gletscher, Switzerland, 2014 by Scott Conarroe

On Thursday Scott Conarroe’s photographic series of the European Alps; Frontiere, Frontiera, Grenze will open as part of an exhibition that pairs it alongside the glacial photography of Vittorio Sella. This ongoing project is an exploration of the shifting borders of the Alp nations that move as the glaciers recede. Conarroe has repeatedly visited these regions in order to develop an archival timeline that depicts these transient landscapes.

Part Time Researcher
You will need to be very organised with a strong attention to detail. Ideally the candidate will be a focused individual with an interest in glacier geology and the environment. Previous experience researching and familiarity with scholastic papers is ideal.
Main duties will be research and development of our upcoming expeditions and platforms, this includes location research and scientific outreach therefore confidence is crucial. Other duties will include helping to fundraise through multiple channels and preparing presentations.

Fundraising Intern
Requirements include strong office admin skills with a good command of written and spoken English, as main duties will be fundraising including writing various applications, documents and presentations. You will need to be very organised with a keen eye for detail.
Ideally the candidate will be a focused individual with an interest and/or experience working in environmental science and glacial geology.
The charity spans the arts, science and educational sectors and so this position would be great for a student with an open mind and broad interests. You will gain real work experience contributing to the charity and have the chance to interact with colleagues who are at the top of their field. You will be able to experience all aspects of the charity and become an integral part of a network creating a real difference to climate change awareness.
This will be one/two days a week to start immediately for a minimum of three months with expenses reimbursed.

Lewis Glacier, Mount Kenya (2015) by Simon Norfolk

As a result of winning the Earth Award (sponsored by LensCulture) in 2015, Simon Norfolk’s contribution to Project Pressure, documenting Lewis Glacier on Mount Kenya, is now part of a stimulating group show at Kunst Haus Wien, Vienna. Seen on Earth presents multiple photographic interpretations of the ongoing destruction of the environment. It aims to depict the increasing pollution of the environment and the resulting impact of climate and ecological change.

Seen on Earth runs 17th March – 30th June 2016.

Cairngorms, Scotland by Toby Smith

Mount Aragats is both the highest point in Armenia, a beautiful national symbol and a popular destination for tourists. Toby Smith and Project Pressure will complete a summer expedition to circumnavigate and summit Mount Aragats, documenting the stunning landscapes, historical sites and incredible panoramic views. The results will be geo-tagged and published online as part of the Project Pressure archive. Lake Sevan, the ‘recreational and economic heart’ of Armenia will then be explored to create a vivid portrait of this country’s landscape.

Tasman Glacier by Klaus Thymann

With such close ties to the World Photography Organisation we are delighted to have been featured in their blog. The interview with charity director Klaus Thymann charts recent successful expeditions as well as the future development of the charity. It also highlights some of the fantastic contributions made to the archive last year, from Fox Glacier in New Zealand to Eqalorutsit Glacier in South Greenland.
Simon Norfolk’s contribution to the Project Pressure archive documenting Lewis Glacier in Kenya won in the landscape category of the Sony World Photography Award last year. We hope to continue producing award winning artwork, with four new artists adding to our roster of talented contributors.

Project Pressure contributing artist, Mariele Neudecker, has the opening of her new exhibition Plastic Vanitas at Bow Arts, London today. The show comprises of a new photographic series that catalogues the MoDiP’s archives.
Neudecker travelled to Greenland in October 2015 for Project Pressure to document the tidewater glaciers that surround Narsarsuaq. The work she made on location will contribute to her upcoming shows as part of Hull 2017 – City of Culture 2017 and Some Things Happen All At Once at the Zeppelin Museum, Friedrichshafen. Looking back over 2015 we are proud to have successfully completed expeditions to New Zealand, Greenland and USA. This year looks set to be a great one; with new contributions from some amazing artists. Including Scott Conarroe, who will continue his documentation of glaciers across the European Alps. We are also aiming to develop the MELT platform that will host the archive, currently running as a beta version.

Acclaimed photographer Peter Funch has recently returned from his second Project Pressure expedition to the Cascade Mountain Range. In 2014 Funch and his team travelled to Mount Baker to replicate archival postcards of the mountain’s most famous vistas. On their return to the national park they turned their attention to Mount Rainier, drawing on the rich sightseeing history of Washington’s highest peak.
They started their journey near Nisqually Glacier travelling towards Camp Miur. Here they were able to draw comparisons from the archival postcards, including from the edge of the Nisqually Glacier valley. The team hiked across the Burroughs Mountain Ridge, then continued their journey across the national park at Tolmie Peak near Eunice Lake.
